As of 3:30 p.m. Friday, less than 1,000 seats plus 1,000 standing room only tickets were available for the “Pack the Pit” promotion where all tickets are $10. The UNM ticket office opens at 4 p.m. Saturday.
Tickets can also be obtained by calling (505) 925-LOBO or 800-955-HOWL, or visiting www.GoLobos.com.
The Lobos, who are playing a home game for the first time in almost three weeks, have begun to rejuvenate fan interest with a 14-2 record and three straight road victories at Hawaii, UTEP and Wyoming, the latter a double-overtime thriller in the Mountain West Conference opener where UNM trailed by 16 points at halftime.
Lobo fans, known for years for their loyal support, are beginning to return after difficult years under Fran Frischilla and Ritchie McKay. Under first-year coach Steve Alford, New Mexico has already won more road games this year (four) than it did in the last two years. With a victory Saturday he Lobos can match their entire win total from last year.
New Mexico won its first seven games before sustaining back-to-back losses at nationally-ranked Mississippi and archrival New Mexico State. The Lobos avenged their loss to the Aggies as part of their current seven-game winning streak.
SDSU, 11-4 overall and 1-0 in conference play, is starting a young lineup with three
juniors and a pair of freshmen. The only senior on the roster is guard Matt Thomas, who has scored just 8 points in 10 games played.
The Aztecs are coming off a State fell 62-56 loss to Northern Colorado on Wednesday.
Like the Lobos, SDSU has balanced scoring column. Junior Lorenzo Wade is averaging 14.7 points per game and fellow junior Kyle Spain is at 13.3 ppg and also leads the team in rebounding at 6 a game.
San Diego State coach Steve Fisher, who guided Michigan to a national championship as a replacement coach in the 1990 NCAA tournament, is in his 17th season as a head coach and ninth year at San Diego State, which makes his tenure the longest among MWC coaches. He is 322-202 overall, 138-120 at SDSU and has an 8-9
record against UNM, including 3-5 in The Pit.
The Aztecs opened conference play with a 64-57 home victory over TCU last Saturday. SDSU led 32-13 at halftime.
New Mexico is 10-0 in The Pit this season with an average winning margin of 22.8 points per game.
The game will be telecast on The Mountain network and broadcast on 770 KOB-AM.
