Scorpions gain share of first place

Continued from Page 1

The Scorpions went 6-1 on its seasobn-long seven game homestand, winning the last six in a row after dropping the opener to Arizona. Now they'll have to sustain that momentum on the road, where they have often struggled this year.

For the game, New Mexico amassed a season-high 60 shots. McWhinney ended up with 57 saves, two short of the league high this season. Ironically, it was Amarillo who had 59 shots stopped by Rio Grande Valey's David Leemanowicz on Jan. 19.

By contrast, New Mexico goalie Mike Minard faced only 18 shots, but his glove save on an odd-man rush preserved the two-point victory and prevented overtime.

The Scorpions play five of their next six games on the road, starting Friday at Texas and a rematch with Amarillo on Saturday. After a 3:15 p.m. home game on Sunday with Colorado, New Mexico plays three games in four days at Arizona.
