Former NMAA director considering legislative runContinued from Page 1Contacted in Santa Fe, where he was working as a bill analyst for the Legislature, Salzwedel confirmed he has been approached and said he is considering making the race.
“I’m honored and flattered that people think enough of my tenure with the NMAA that they think I would be a good legislator,” Salzwedel said. “Working this session and seeing the Legislature operate from this perspective has really been a rewarding experience.”
Salzwedel, who lived in Rio Rancho for several years, said he expects to make a final decision sometime in March.
Salzwedel served as the executive director of the NMAA from 1986-2002 after serving several years as an assistant director. He currently serves as an adjunct professor and student teaching coordinator at the Rio Rancho campus of New Mexico Highlands University.
District 22 includes parts of Sandoval, Bernalillo and Santa Fe counties. Towns in the Sandoval County section of the district include Placitas, Tecolote, Montezuma, La Huerta, La Madera and Puerte Cito. The district includes parts of precincts 5, 28, 56 and 65.
The district itself continues long the spine of the Sandia Mountains and includes towns such as Sandia Park, San Antonio, Carnuel and Tijeras before extending east along Interstate 40 past Edgewood. It’s an odd shape that could be described as a giant “Z” only that the middle line is horizontal instead of diagional with a reverse “C” at the bottom point and an extension at the top.
