A Fox News poll released last week has the Republican Arizona senator within the margin of error of +/-3 percentage points.when matched against Clinton, the frontrunner among Democrats. In a matchup against McCain trails by three points, Rudy Giuliani by four points and both Mitt Romney and Fred Thompson would lose to her by twelve points.

The general election matchups, according to the Oct. 9-10 Fox News/Opinion Dynamics Poll, show:

* Clinton 47, McCain 44

* Clinton 47, Giuliani 43

* Clinton 50, Thompson 38

* Clinton 50 percent, Romney 38

McCain campaign manager Rick Davis said the poll backs up a Rasmussen poll released earlier showing McCain only one point behind Clinton, compared to a seven-point margin with Giuliani .

"What do these polls mean? They mean that John McCain's experienced leadership, courageous service and the bold solutions he is proposing on the campaign trail are resonating with the American people," Davis said. "They also mean that our party can nominate a candidate who can beat Hillary Clinton without compromising the bedrock principles and values that are our party's foundation.

"Republican primary voters are figuring out that supporting a candidate who is not prepared to be Commander in Chief from day one, or one who is out of step with our party's core values, is a recipe for another Clinton Administration."
