Vote 'Yes' For Parks
Voters in Rio Rancho are getting to decide on two issues in coming days.
For our take on the controversial Centeral New Mexico tax boundary issue, look for a posting tomorrow.
The other vote, fortunately, is an easy call. The $12 million bond issue for the Sports Complex North is a no-brainer yes vote.
Money will be used to build five Little League fields, 15 acres of soccer fields, play areas, a small pool, walking trails and landscaping. It's a much-needed facility in the Enchanted Hills area at the Chayote and Lincoln roads intersection.
Property tax rates won't go up if the bond issue passes, as a "yes" vote simply allows the city to replace expiring bonds. At best you'd save all of $30 a year if the bond fails, according to city clerk Roman Montoya.
Some residents in the north end of town claim they have been promised an indoor pool at various time in this process, and are making noises about it around this mail-in vote. It does make sense, because a covered pool will make the city more money in the long run than an uncovered facility limited to summer use. But to use any uncertainty as an attempt to defeat the bond issue is wrong. Design work hasn't even begun yet, and it still can be built to allow enclosure. To vote no woudl be a major mistake over a minor issue.
Ballots must be in to City Hall by 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, by mail or personal delivery to the clerk's office.
