2 Scorpions draw suspensions for brawl

Two New Mexico Scorpions have drawn suspensions for participating in a post-game brawl Saturday night.

The Central Hockey League suspended Kevin Harvey for eight games and Blair Stayze for the next three for their involvement in the incident after the final horn in New Mexico’s 4-2 victory over the Rocky Mountain Rage.

The incident began when Rocky Mountain goalie Terry Dunbar hit New Mexico’s Shawn Skiehar with his stick in the closing seconds of the game. The wound required several stitches.

When the horn sounded, Harvey came off the bench and went after Dunbar, and the battle escalated from there.

From the Rage, Dunbar earned a 15-game suspension and Jason Schmit drew a four-game penalty from the league.

“It was an unfortunate end to a great game played by our team,” said Scorpions’ head coach Randy Murphy. “We will be playing with a short roster the next few games and expect our players to rise to the occasion.”

It was only the second loss by Rocky Mountain all year. The first was also to the Scorpions by the lopsided score of 10-0.

New Mexico will only be allowed to dress 16 players for the next three games. Stayzer is eligible to play when the Scorpions host Rio Grande Valley on Dec. 15.

The Scorpions will then only be allowed to dress 17 players until Harvey returns from his suspension on Dec. 29, when the Scorpions host the Amarillo Gorillas.

The Scorpions head to the road for games Friday and Saturday night in Odessa. Both games can be heard on 1050 KTBL or seen for free on CHL Network starting at 6:05 p.m.

The next Scorpions home game is Dec. 13 against Amarillo. Click here for ticket information, or call  881-PUCK (7825).
