Kids say the darndest things

We have all heard the saying “children say the darndest things,” but I don’t think we can really know how true that really is until we have our own children or spend enormous amounts of time around them.

Each day I marvel at the thought process my 2-year-old son has developed. He has an expansive vocabulary for his age, but occasionally still finds it difficult to express thoughts and feelings into words.

A few nights ago was just another one of these instances.

At 8:30 p.m. I put my son to bed.  Of course, this was after going through the long nightly ritual of saying good-night to every toy in his room and every character on his wall, reading a story and saying his prayers.

About 15 minutes later I heard his little voice yelling down the hall: “Mommy, pee-pee toilet,” repeatedly.  We are working on potty training so it is important to listen to these requests and act on them promptly.

We went into the bathroom, took off his pajama bottoms and diaper, and he proceeded to sit on his training toilet.  While sitting there he said over and over, in a very deliberate tone, “Sit down, memis,” which happens to be what he calls his penis.

I couldn’t for the life of me figure out what he meant, until I looked down.

His penis was standing at attention and despite all of his effort to aim it downward, it kept popping back up.  Needless to say, he didn’t go potty.

It was at that moment that I realized he had rationalized this event in his mind, and in doing so was trying to overcome the hurdle of the situation by using words he believed would remedy his dilemma.

And, amazingly he was able once again to express himself effectively and justify his thoughts in his way by saying the darndest thing.
