Amarillo takes 3rd December game from Scorpions

The SCORE

The third time the Amarillo Gorillas played in New Mexico in December was just as charming as the first two visits.

Amarillo scored two third-period goals to defeat the New Mexico Scorpions 3-1 Saturday night, 24 hours after the Gorillas dominated New Mexico 4-1. Amarillo also defeated New Mexico 5-4 in overtime on Dec. 13.

Chris Martini's goal 4:19 into the third period broke a 1-1 tie, and Chris Lipsett's second goal of the night on a later power play sealed the Amarillo victory.

"It was a better effort, but the results are not where we want them," Scorpions' coach Randy Murphy said. "Our work ethic was 100 percent better. We're maybe not working as intelligent as we should or as we have been in the past.

"Give their team credit. They played well both games. I just don't think they saw our best."

After a scoreless first period, Amarillo got on the board first. Lipsett took a pass from Trevor Read on the right wing, skated in front of the goal and backhanded a shot past New Mexico goalie Mike Minard 6:28 into the period.

New Mexico evened the game with 4:07 left in the period. One second after a 5-on-3 advantage expired, Aaron MacInnis took a pass from Konrad Reeder just inside the blue line on the right side and fired a slapshot past goalie Dan McWhinney to tie the game.

The extended power play was the result of back-to-back hooking penalties on Amarillo's David Nimmo and Keith Rowe.

McWhinney had 28 saves on the night; Minard had 27.

"You've got to give credit where credit is due. Their goalie played well," Murphy said. "Last night we made them look good; tonight he made some legitimate saves.

"He played better than our scorers did."
