9 file for school board positions

Rio Rancho will have at least one new school board member and one returning member after elections early next year.

A total of nine candidates filed for the three districts up for the Feb. 3 election.

Incumbent Margaret Terry is unopposed in District 3 and will rejoin members Marty Scharfglass and Divyesh Patel, whose terms expire in 2011.

District 1 representative Don Schlichte, who was first elected to the board in 2001, will face two opponents, Jan Marfyak and Dale Henderson.

Lisa Cour, who was defeated in her attempt to unseat Jane Powdrell-Culbert in the race for the New Mexico House of Representatives, previously announced she would not seek reelection for a fourth term on the school board. Five candidates filed to replace her, including two members of the Enchanted Hills Homeowners Association – secretary Dominic Dennis and treasurer Tom Dixon.

The other candidates are Craig Brandt, Shayne Sawyer and Richard del Hierro.
