The SCORE
It’s been said that home is where the heart is. Unfortunately for the New Mexico Scorpions,; it’s also where the losses have been this season.
Visiting Corpus Christi scored three goals in less than four minutes early in the second period to post a come-from-behind 4-2 victory over New Mexico on Saturday before a season-high crowd of 4,528.
The loss dropped the Scorpions’ home record to 5-12-2 this season. Amarillo (5-13-1) is the only Central Hockey League team that has played worse at home this season.
The Scorpions fell behind 1-0 when Chris Richards beat goalie Andrew Martin with 15:44 left in the first period, but New Mexico rallied to tie the contest on Chris Robertson’s goal with 8:45 remaining in the period. After keeping the game even for the rest of the period, New Mexico jumped ahead 2-1 just 56 seconds into the second stanza on a power play goal by Aaron MacInnis, with Mitch Stephens and Robertson getting the assists.
Then the roof caved in.
Defenseman Lyon Messier was whistled for hooking 1:17 into the period, and the Icerays cashed in with a power play goal of its own by right winger Ryan Bennett. Then forward Curtis Huppe took control of the game, scoring at 16:22 and 14:26 marks to give Corpus Christi the lead for good. Despite five other Corpus Christi penalties in the rest of the game, New Mexico failed to score on goalie Kris Tebbs and the Icerays defense.
New Mexico ended up outshooting Corpus Christi 30-28, including a 13-8 advantage in the final period, but went just 1-of-5 on the power play for the night compared to 2-of-6 for the Icerays.
