Clovis boys hold off Rio Rancho

The SCORE
Rio Rancho boys basketball coach Brian Smith summed up his weekend in two words: Lost opportunities.
For the second straight night, his team had a chance down the stretch to defeat one of the state's perennial powersOn . And for the second consecutive night, the Rams came up just short.
On Saturday it was the Clovis Wildcats who prevailed 76-60 in a fast-paced, tense contest at the RRHS gym. The night before, the Rams dropped a 61-60 heartbreaker to Hobbs.
For the second night in the row, a big man had a dominant game agaisnt the Rams. And once again RRHS trailed for most of the game, only to get in position to possibly pull out a comeback once again.
After trailing by as much as 15 points in the second half, Rio Rancho cut the margin to six and forced a turnover that could have given the Rams a chance to make a one-possession game. But unlike Friday, where Rio Rancho hit some clutch 3-pointers and eventually tied the game, the Rams gave the ball back to Clovis and couldn't get any closer.
MORE TO COME.
