Rio Rancho girls win
state volleyball title
Football team advances with 7-point victory at Hobbs
Another weekend, another state championship for Rio Rancho High School.
One
week after the Rio Rancho girls earned a blue trophy in soccer, the
girl's volleyball team followed suit, defeating La Cueva in four games
Saturday night. The scores were 27-25, 25-19, 25-27, 25-23.
Though
the victory in the championship game may not have been as exciting as
the four-overtime, three-goal soccer rally against Sandia last Friday,
the top-seeded Rams had a few exciting moments of their own, including
a five-game come-from-behind victory over No. 2 seed Las Cruces in the
semifinals.
The football team, meanwhile, knew the road to a
possible state title would go through Las Cruces, with Mayfield and Las
Cruces High the top two seeds in the NMAA bracket. The Rams lived to
fight another day on Saturday, defeating Hobbs 28-21 to earn another
road trip next weekend for a 7 p.m. game with the top-ranked Trojans at
Field of Dreams Stadium in Las Cruces.
In the other half of the bracket, No. 5 Eldorado edged Valley 24-21 and will play Cibola at Milne Stadium on Friday.
Also,
La Cueva dominated Alamogordo 34-13 and will travel to third-seeded
Clovis, while No. 2 Las Cruces welcomes Manzano, which routed Onate
50-19. The Las Cruces-Manzano game will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the
Field of Dreams.
The other two games will
be contested at the same time Rio Rancho tries to upset Mayfield, the
two-time defending state champions. The Trojans were also the state
runners-up from 2001-03 and champions in 1995, 1996 and 1998.
