Scorpions Hold on to Post 3rd Straight Win

The New Mexico Scorpions won their their third game in three days on Sunday, holding on to beat the visiting Arizona Sundogs 5-4 in a Central Hockey League matchup at the Santa Ana Star Center.

The Scorpions, who beat Amarillo in a home-and-home series to start the weekend, built a 5-2 lead after two periods. New Mexico used two power play goals by Vladimir Hartinger and an unassisted score by Craig Macdonald to take a 3-2 lead after one period, then built a three-goal advantage in the second stanza on goals by Blair Stavzer and Dominic Osman.

Arizona came back with two goals in the final period, the last of which came on a power play with just five seconds left in the game.

The first-place Sundogs outshot New Mexico 32-23.

The victory moved the Scorpions, 7-5-1, within two points of first place in the Southwest Division. Both Arizona and Odessa are 8-4-1, good for 17 points and a tie for the division lead.

New Mexico begins a four-game Texas tour Wednesday with a game agaisnt Rio Grande Valley in Hidalgo, located between McAllen and Brownsville. The Scorpons then play back-to-back games at Laredo on Friday and Saturday, then play a single game on Sunday.

New Mexico's next home games are Nov. 30 against Colorado and Dec. 1 agaisnt Rocky Mountain. Game time both nights is 7:15 p.m.

 On Saturday night, the Scorpions completed a home-and-home series sweep with Amarillo by taking a 5-1 road victory.

For the second straight night the Scorpions used their special teams to grab the lead, gaining a 1-0 advantage at 13:53 of the first period on a short-handed goal by Chris Robertson, who broke free and took a nice feed from Kevin Harvey. New Mexico extended its lead in the second period when Macdonald picked up his third goal of the season.

The Gorillas tried to rally when Shaun Arvai’s shot deflected off defenseman Michael Kolarz’s stick and into the Scorpions net, making it a 2-1 game with 4:23 left in the second period. But once again New Mexico came through with a shorthanded goal, this time from Dominic Osman (with an assist by Konrad Reeder) just 2:33 into the period.

Mitch Stephens extended the New Mexico lead with a shot from the high slot with four minutes left in the game, and Stayzer added insult to injury with an unassisted goal with only 16 seconds left in the game.

New Mexico won its fifth game in the last six outings despite being outshot 37-31 and going 0-for-7 on the power play.

On Friday, Reeder scored two power play goals, the second 1:37 into overtime, to give the Scorpions a 2-1 victory. Amarillo’s only goal, by Matt Miller, also came on the power play.

It was Reeder’s fifth straight game with at least one goal.
