Walters not sure what position he'll seek in 2008 elections

Glenn Walters, a former candidate for the state legislature, is mulling three possible races in the 2008 election cycle.

Walters said he has been approached to run for the House District 60 seat he sought in 2004, for mayor of Rio Rancho and for the District 1 city council seat that current Mayor Mike Williams will try to reclaim.

“People have talked to me about all three positions, but I haven’t made a decision yet.” Walters said. “When I get to that point, I’ll let you know.

“My preference is toward state rep. That’s where I believe I can be most effective. I just have to research that out.”

Walters said he had no specific timetable in mind for making a decision.

“There’s no rush, I don’t think,” he said. “The only thing that’s good (about announcing) right now is that you can do some fundraising and things like that. That’s the only advantage probably right now. I just don’t really see any reason I have to do it right this second.

“It may be before the first of the year. It may be tomorrow. It may be two months from now; it may be three months from now. I’ll let you know.”

Walters, a retired Air Force veteran and management consultant, has been active on several boards and commissions in the city. He was named the outstanding volunteer by the Rio Rancho Public Schools in 2004.

Walters was defeated by incumbent Tom Swisstack for the House District 60 seat in 2004, only two years after Swisstack initially won the seat by only 42 votes over Marsha Atkin. Swisstack, who has already announced he is running for mayor again, beat former mayor Jim Owen in the 2006 House 60 race.

Williams, who was the District 1 councilor and voted deputy mayor by his Governing Body peers, moved up to interim mayor when Kevin Jackson resigned in July, and was named to fill the post the next month by the council.

Fay Davis, who was later appointed by Williams to fill his term, has said she has no plans to seek elected office.
