No. 1 Trojans Dominate Rams
LAS CRUCES – Just like the snow that hit the state, the Rio Rancho High School football team ran into a storm Friday night.
And unfortunately, they couldn’t weather the blizzard.
Top-ranked
Mayfield rolled up 426 yards in offense and scored 40 points in the
first half, then coasted to a 57-16 victory over the Rams. The Trojans,
10-1, scored on a 73-yard run by Brandon Maurer on their opening drive and never looked back.
Quarterback Matt Sandoval added touchdown passes of 36 and 70 yards to Nate Enriquez for the two-time defending state champions in the first half, and Jacob Ceniceros and Christian Maes had scoring runs. The Mayfield defense even got into the act, as defensive end Jose Bustillos returned a fumble for 22 yards for a score.
In
the opening half alone, Sandoval threw for 203 yards and ran for 71,
and Maurer had 95 yards rushing. By contrast, ninth-seeded Rio Rancho,
which finishes the year 6-6, had three turnovers and managed just 63
yards in the opening 24 minutes. The Rams’ only points came on a
30-yard field goal by Brandon Posey.
Mayfield has not
lost to a New Mexico team since the 2004 state playoffs against Clovis.
The only blemish on their record this season was a loss to El Paso
Montwood.
Chris Newsome caught a 63-yard TD pass from Orion Murphy midway through the third period for Rio Rancho’s first touchdown, and Thomas Trujillo caught a 13-yard scoring pass from Murphy on the final play of the game.
